Hello and welcome. I am setting up this blog in the hope that there will come a time when I will have something interesting and illuminating to say. For the moment, I would just like to say hello and to post a few photos from our recent trip to Eastern Europe.
Part of the goal of the trip was to visit the city where my maternal grandmother was born and where she lived until her family moved to Vienna when she was fourteen. In her time, the city was part of Galicia and part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was called Lemberg. Then it was briefly part of Poland and was called Lvov. Now it is in Ukraine and is called Lviv. Both of the following photos were taken in Lviv. The first photo is self-explanatory. The second photo was taken in the Jewish part of town. Before the Holocaust about one third of the citizens of of the city were Jewish. Now there are about 1000. The photo shows the place where a mezuzah once was.
